Historic farmland with old monastery site β’ Rotherfield, East Sussex
Beautiful rolling Sussex farmland in the heart of the High Weald. This private estate features stunning views across the Weald, historic outbuildings, and welcoming landowners who've granted JOMF exclusive access.
The farm has 7 large fields available for detecting. On our first visit (March 2026) we explored the two paddocks near the farmhouse β finding vintage dairy memorabilia and getting a feel for the land.
One of the fields was historically the site of an old monastery. Medieval religious sites are prime detecting territory β expect medieval coins, tokens, pilgrim badges, and ecclesiastical artefacts. This is the main target for the May dig.
Medieval religious site with high find potential
Plenty of ground to cover over multiple visits
Tea, cake, and farmhouse hospitality
This Victorian Ordnance Survey map hangs in the farmhouse. It shows the Rotherfield area as it was β old field boundaries, footpaths, and farm buildings that may have left detectable traces in the soil.
